Sirenię powołał do życia były gitarzysta i kompozytor Tristani Morten Veland . Zespół gra połączenie metalu gotyckiego, rocka, z wpływami zarówno klasycznymi jak i black i death metalu. Sirenia powstała na początku 2001 roku, kiedy drogi Mortena rozeszły się z jego poprzednim zespołem (powodem były różnice muzyczne i konflikty personalne). Veland miał w tym czasie wiele pomysłów i był gotów je zrealizować. Dużo zainwestował w nowy sprzęt i spędził wiele czasu na komponowaniu w domowym studio. Mortem wkrótce rozpoczął odnawianie kontaktów z wytwórnia Napalm Records oraz ze swoim producentem Terje Refsnes z Sound Suite Studios. Studio zostało zarezerwowane na listopad i grudzień 2001 roku i pozostałe sześć miesięcy Veland spędził na doskonaleniu materiału na mający powstać album. W tym czasie do zespołu dołączył Kristian Gundersen (gitara i czysty wokal). W połowie listopada 2001 roku zespół nagrał dziewięć utworów na swój debiutancki album "At Sixes and Sevens". Do nagrań swojego głosu użyczyła Fabienne Gondamin. W zespole, jako klawiszowiec pojawił się również Pete Johansen. Wiosną i latem 2003 Sirenia ryszyła w trasę koncertową. W sierpniu 2003 Morten i Kristian ponownie zjawili się w Sound Suite Studio aby nagrać drugi album zespołu: “An Elixir for Existence”, zawierający wszystko od melodyjnego metalu po spokojne, atmosferyczne numery. Wokalistką na tej płycie była Henriette Bordvik. W 2006 roku do Sireni dołączyła nowa wokalistka Monika Pedersen. Pod koniec lutego 2007 roku ukazał się "Nine Destinies And A Downfall" Sirenia: Morten Veland - growling, gitara elektryczna/basowa, instrumenty klawiszowe/perkusyjne (Tristania) Monika Pedersen - śpiew Jonathan A Perez - instrumenty perkusyjne Björn Landa - gitara elektryczna podczas koncertów Roland Navratil - instrumenty perkusyjne podczas koncertów
